In your words
For many women in their 40s, 50s and beyond, midlife is less about the chaos and feeling of just getting through the day or the week and more about recalibration. The “I’m so busy” years of raising families, building careers and holding everything together start to ease and those thought start swirling in your head: What now? What’s next? Is this it? They’re questions that can feel both liberating and unsettling. Let’s face it – few of us get to midlife without challenges and trauma, so how we see the next phase could be either glass half-empty or half-full. And while new challenges quietly emerge (ageing parents, health changes, divorce, deaths, new relationships and ends of friendships), there’s also the emergence of new possibilities – the opportunity to travel, take up new hobbies, indulge children or grandchildren, create new relationships or connect with colleagues and old friends from the past that fell out of touch when life got busy. In a recent survey*, Australian women said midlife is definitely challenging, but despite changing situations, many had still found their self-confidence and sense of self – even stronger than when they were in their 20s. Family had become meaningful in different ways and they were finding new and fulfilling ways to define their worth. In another survey**, the results were similar... woman are grabbing the joy that their life experiences have brought them. And while some women did feel invisible, an overwhelming two in three are still boldly confident in how they’re showing up and being seen. Cue the growth of content creators aged 50+ who are gaining traction across the social media landscape and suddenly being celebrated by younger users for their style, humour, wisdom and life insights.
“In my 20s, I spent a lot more time worrying about what other people thought. Now, I’m more confident in who I am and much clearer on what I will and won’t tolerate. I have less time for drama, mixed signals or things that drain my energy, and more appreciation for what feels easy, genuine and worthwhile.”
“When I realised that I had accidentally made some huge life choices based on what I imagined other people wanted for and from me, things changed. From there I had to start learning how to be painfully honest with myself and others.”

“Over time, there were lots of smaller moments that made me realise how important it is to back yourself. I learnt that you need to be happy with who you are because it’s your life to live.”

“I've always felt good in my skin, but I think once you get older you start to notice what ‘good’ feels like for you, or how you personally want to define ‘beauty’. Beauty has shifted for me from a lot of external factors to things that matter more internally like beautiful minds, beautiful personality traits, beautiful morals, not just a beautiful exterior.”

In midlife, women are putting themselves first. A huge 77% of you told us you’re placing more focus on yourselves than ever before, believing happiness and good health are the key factors for success in life. Many of you told us you’re confident travelling locally and internationally to immerse yourself in new cultures, broaden the mind and meet new people. And despite a laughter line or two on your face, and a different body shape to your 20s and 30s, you’ve learned to love your own skin. As for new skills and interests, it looks like you’re signing up! The research shows that 50+ is a key time to start expanding with new skills and tapping into creative pursuits you’ve always been interested in but never had time for. More importantly, for many women the key to thriving post-50 is a great attitude. For Liz, turning 50 was a turning point where it felt like things in life were actually starting to get a bit easier. “No matter what life throws at me now I know I can deal with it, and I’m forever grateful I’m still here and got the energy to live life the way I want to right now. No more living by other people’s expectations because those people come and go, but my happiness is constant.” “I’m more aware, more resilient, still an optimist and forever positive and hopeful. Life is, and always will be, a glass half full.” Maria, 60.

Inner Strength
Finding your authentic self
So, you’re midway through life and from the outside, everything looks fine. But from the inside, something feels slightly out of alignment. You’re still going a great job at being you – remembering birthdays, organising family events and social catch-ups, getting to work on time and making other people feel better. As we move through life, we’re often shaped by comfort, approval or survival, and in the process begin to feel a growing sense of misalignment. But how would it feel to revise that current version of yourself? Not one shaped by obligation or comparison, but by desire to be a version of you that feels steady, honest and quietly true? For Jane Waterhouse, career and executive coach at Sister, rediscovering self in midlife is more than just saying ‘no’ more often or taking up a new hobby. But it also doesn’t have to be an extreme statement either. “The idea of ‘finding yourself’ in midlife is somewhat boring. What I witness in my work is more accurately described as ‘a coming home’, or a ‘return’ to one’s true self and soul, rather than a ‘finding’. Midlife appears more as a Third Act, Prime Time or Time to Fly – terms I am more likely to use to describe what can be the most fabulously liberating time of a woman’s life if embraced.” Why are more women taking control? Jane’s approach to helping women uncover their authentic self is far from boring. Having done an enormous amount of work in tapping into her own authenticity, she’s well-equipped to help guide women who know there’s so much more to themselves to yet reveal. But why are more women starting to feel the need to start doing things differently? “There’s a number of reasons we’re better equipped to ‘fly’ in this era of our lives. Increased health and wellness is increasing our longevity, HRT (hormone replacement therapy) has enabled more women to keep working and living full and fabulous lives, and education opportunities have allowed women to be working in areas that traditionally kept women out. Technology has also given women of any age more opportunity to work freely, anywhere and at any time. This flex has been a gamechanger for women in Prime Time thinking about making new moves.”
It’s not always easy – feel the fear “Through my journey and that of the paths of women I have had the privilege to shine a light on as a manager, mentor and a coach, I sum up success at this stage with the mantra, ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway.’ It’s not surprising that we can be sheepish about change at this stage of our life. Homelessness for women over 50 is a very real threat we are all too aware of, so we have to be careful when it comes to taking risks or making big changes. Alongside leadership and coaching, I have found my study in mysticism and spirituality can also be very helpful for women who are questioning their life and looking for higher, more conscious work to explore, without dramatically altering other parts of their life straight away.”
How to tap into the best version of you, according to an expert
“Feel the fear and do it anyway”
What holds women back from change? “Permission is a word that has trapped many women, and a significant trigger for questioning life at this age. Most women 55+ in 2026 have had to ask for permission to do most things in their life, consciously and unconsciously. It’s a liberation. I usually start my work with women by helping them get reconnected with their heart and body – when that happens, things start to shift, doors open, new conversations happen and opportunities appear where there had been none previously. We then co-create goals and small steps towards a new beginning or simply an evolution. I have witnessed many women find a new strength (whether it’s hormone-related or not) when the clothes they are wearing start to feel tight (physically and metaphorically) and they want to loosen the binds. They are ready to try something new and don’t have to ask for permission to do so.”
What triggers do you often see? “Caring for elders is a key trigger for change. My mother has been in a high-care dementia facility for four years. It is torturingly sad to watch her mind be eaten away, yet paradoxically, she has become one of the greatest inspirations for me to live a big life. We have but a short time on this magnificent jewel of a planet. Sick and ageing parents are very sobering and oddly motivating. As part of the wake-up, women start to realise how life is short, and in the Third Act, it’s time to use the gifts we have been given, if we haven’t already. Living an okay life is a less attractive option than living an amazing life and living free.”
What can accelerate your journey? “When embracing change at this time of life, success is sweeter when it’s shared. Bring the family and friends along for the adventure, let them be inspired by your new ideas and beginnings. Not only are you doing this for yourself but you are role modelling to them that we ‘grow as we age’, not just ‘grow older’. Family are often simply inspired by a parent, friend or family member who chooses happiness and freedom. In doing so, you give them the ‘permission’ to do the same as they age. This is not time for guilt – just feel the fear and do it anyway.”

Skin health in midlife becomes less about chasing glow and more about building strength and maintaining the skin’s barrier. As hormones shift and collagen naturally declines, our skin’s barrier, resilience and ability to repair itself matter more than ever. Dermatologists agree: strong and healthy skin is better equipped to withstand everything the years throw at us, behaving better even when things get tough. It's never too late to invest in your skin, even with a light touch. Think of it as supporting what your skin needs now, so it can keep doing its job well for years to come. Here are our top five tips to keep your skin in its best condition possible.
5 steps to maximise your midlife skin health
Support and repair from within Supporting skin from within matters more as we move through midlife. Collagen provides the scaffolding that keeps skin firm and resilient, but production naturally slows with age so it’s even more important you’re getting adequate protein and collagen‑rich foods (or supplements, where appropriate). Omega‑3 fatty acids, meanwhile, support cell membranes and reduce inflammation, helping skin stay supple and strong. Nutrition is every bit as important as skin care and can really help to amplify skincare benefits.
Protect the barrier When experts talk about the skin barrier, they’re referring to the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it as a rendered wall: skin cells are the bricks, and lipids like ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are the mortar holding everything together. Its job is to keep moisture in and irritants, bacteria and pollution out. More recently, it’s become a bit of a beauty buzzword because we’re experiencing sensitivity, dryness and flare‑ups more often thanks to over‑exfoliation, aggressive actives and stressed lifestyles. Add hormonal changes in midlife, which naturally weaken barrier lipids, and suddenly protecting this layer isn’t a trend, it’s essential. Avoid the foaming cleansers that worked well when we were younger and look for ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids in your serums and moisturisers.

Age-proof your skin The need for sun protection never stops, no matter what stage of life you're at. UV exposure quietly weakens collagen, disrupts the skin barrier and drives pigmentation long before lines appear. Dermatologists and health experts are clear: daily broad‑spectrum SPF is the most effective anti‑ageing step you can take. Apply it every morning, rain or shine, and reapply when outdoors. Think of sunscreen as skin insurance—protecting strength, texture and tone now, and well into the future. If there’s one skincare step you want to skip, don’t make it this one.
Actives with intent Using actives thoughtfully is about being strategic, not aggressive. Ingredients like retinol, vitamin C and exfoliating acids are powerful tools for strengthening skin and boosting collagen production but overuse can compromise the barrier and trigger sensitivity, especially in midlife. A light touch is paramount and experts consistently recommend starting low, going slow and prioritising consistency over intensity. Actives should be supporting your skin, not stressing it.
Prioritise recovery Prioritising recovery is the easiest upgrade you can make, and the one with the biggest payoff. Skin repairs itself while you sleep. Regulate stress and keep routines simple. Consistent rest, manageable stress levels and nights without overloading on actives allow inflammation to settle and barrier function to rebound. The bonus? What benefits your skin also supports your whole body, from hormones to immunity. Sometimes the most effective skincare step isn’t another product, it's more about giving your system time to recover.
